Motorcycle Navigation Application: Stegra

Writer: SilverFox SilverFox

Stegra is a Swedish designed map application that “codes for the ride and rides for the soul”...which is awesome!! One of the immediate feedbacks that we get from Stegra users is that they like that the map application promotes real adventure riding!

The user is encouraged to choose the types of routes that they are looking for, with a selection of five options:

  1. Adventure: For avoiding the paved roads! Making unpaved roads the priority and even to include smaller tracks if they are mapped.

  2. Curvy: For staying on the tarmac but making sure to side step the big roads and highways, to allow for the enjoyment of the twists and turns of the smaller paved roadways.

  3. Highway: The straightest and fastest route from “point A” to “point B”

  4. Mountain bike: In case the motorbike is set aside for the weekend and the pedals are going to take over, providing routes on mountain bike specific pathways.

  5. Walking: Walking paths as the priority! For the days in which all the wheels are parked and the feet are the movement method of choice.

Choose your “poison” by clicking the road picture from the upper right corner of the map pages.

The Stegra app is really well laid out for user operations. Behind the “settings” button (⚙️) from the main map view are all of the “standard” settings that you will be looking for; from downloading the area maps, personalizing the look of the maps with buttons and operations, as well as managing your controller settings by programming different buttons.

Simply diving in and pressing buttons on the Stegra app allowed me to figure out the operations relatively quickly. At first it did not seem overly “user friendly”, but after spending a few minutes getting a feel for the operations, I was good to go!

Users can add their own routes, search routes from the public database the Stegra is building up, or simply start a ride and record it as you go. By holding a finger on the map there is an opportunity to add a pin to the map, selecting the chosen location as “start”, “from current location to here” (destination), or “new route from current location to here” (destination). The differences between these destinations will be clarified in future blog updates as we learn more. And if you are anxious for earlier answers, the Stegra team has a Discord chat accessible through their webpage for support.

The other option for route buildings is to click on the “search” icon (🔍) in the upper right corner of the map. From here there is the option to type in an address/location, to show on the map, add as a start or destination, or add as a route (please do all this while parked!).

And for additional ease of use: when a user saves a route in the planner, it automatically syncs not only from the web to their devices, but also the other way around—so any routes recorded or created on the app will sync back to the web as well. This means no manual transfers or separate files; it just works seamlessly across all devices. And by “all” devices, we are not just meaning computer to phone or tablet, but the Stegra platform is also working on both Android and iOS - so, supporting all the different users that are out there!

If you are setting up your SilverFox controller, remember to set it to the “Function 2” key set to get it operating properly with the Stegra app.

So far, during our short winter time evaluation of the Stegra app, it looks really good! We are really looking forward to testing it on two wheels! To get a really good introduction or learn more about the Stegra 2.0, check this out: How To Route Your Adven
