Motorcycle Navigation Application: OsmAnd

Writer: SilverFox SilverFox

OsmAnd is a map program that is actively used by many SilverFox users, and is regularly brought up as a map application that users want their controllers to work with. With a long history of map and navigation building and usage behind it, OsmAnd is a “go to” application for many users!

It is easy to see why users like to use the OsmAnd maps and application options!! The maps are clean and easy to view, with the option of 2D and 3D maps readily available. In the upper left corner of the tablet screen, select the “globe” (🌍) picture to open the map configuration page. From this configuration page you can choose your mode of transportation (in which case the globe will become a car or motorcycle on the map). This is also the menu in which you get to choose all the POI, saved tracks, map markers etc. But…This is only the beginning.

By selecting the menu button in the lower left corner of the map screen, there is an opportunity to personalize the experience even more by selecting other modes of transportation, other “maps & resources”, route planning, personalized screen configuration, and even a large selection of other map “plug-ins” based on your needs.

Also from the main screen is the directions/destination button to go from your location, or a selected location, to the chosen destination. When setting up the start and end points, click on the settings gear (⚙️) under the destination to choose the route details. The details will include avoiding certain types of road (i.e. paved roads) or a series of other options depending on the goals for the day’s travels. There are also options to select a specific “track” that have been saved or imported, in case there is a favorite ride that needs to be done again.

The OsmAnd maps provide great options and opportunities for personalization, so it is easy to see why so many map users speak so highly of the applications operations. Additionally, and one key point for OsmAnd, is that the maps are all downloadable, meaning that offline navigation is possible. While this is a feature that we at SilverFox have yet to try, it is something that I am looking forward to experimenting with this coming summer!

If you are new to using OsmAnd, check-out the “User’s Guide” page on the OsmAnd website, which breaks down the different application options in great detail! Check it out!

When setting up your SilverFox controller both the Function 1 and Function 2 keyset will work, and OsmAnd is set to work with both Android and iOS systems.

Keep an eye out for the updates! As we learn more and gain experience with OsmAnd, we’ll post it all here!
